High School Graduation Rates Plummet Below 50 Percent in Some U.S. Cities

Tuesday, April 01, 2008

WASHINGTON — Seventeen of the nation's 50 largest cities had high school graduation rates lower than 50 percent, with the lowest graduation rates reported in Detroit, Indianapolis and Cleveland, according to a report released Tuesday.

The report, issued by America's Promise Alliance, found that about half of the students served by public school systems in the nation's largest cities receive diplomas. Students in suburban and rural public high schools were more likely to graduate than their counterparts in urban public high schools, the researchers said.

Nationally, about 70 percent of U.S. students graduate on time with a regular diploma and about 1.2 million students drop out annually.

"When more than 1 million students a year drop out of high school, it's more than a problem, it's a catastrophe," said former Secretary of State Colin Powell, founding chair of the alliance.

Interesting, the small town and rural schools don't seem to have nearly as high of a drop out rate. Too much socialism in these large urban areas seems to have flushed their youth down the toilet.

Islam is a religion of murder and violence as practiced by Islamofascists. The rest of the Muslims are just too afraid of the Islamofascists to say much about it. The MSM ignores the ones that do.

And there are still people who think that people who live in rural areas are stupid?

The liberal retort will be, of course, to throw more money at the problem. $3 Trillion dollars in federal assistance since Johnson's "Great Society", and what's to show for it? A permanent underclass that votes in democrats generation after generation. I'm sure the libtards love this kind of news. Today's dropout is tomorrow's vote (if at all) for the libtards.

We need to put the power back into the LOCAL school boards and teachers and keep the feds out of it. I will put ALOT of the blame on parents and the kids themselves with the schools receiving some too. However, if a kid drops out and quits school it cannot solely be the schools fault. NCLB is the biggest waste ever....even the theory is bad. Let us locals control our own schools and keep the state and feds out of it.
