My son had his first lesson last night. He did better than I expected. The trick now is to get enough starter practice so that he will start doing it on his own even if Im not there. Right now, I showed him how to fret and ride a couple of notes. Gotta crawl before you can walk.

I'm getting back into the swing as well. I'm going to have to just go nuts on finger exercises to decrease the occurrence of buzzing/klunking notes.

UPDATE.

I'm not proud or anything but, ...My son likes his bass guitar and is very enthusiastic about learning. I showed him some very basic things to get him started. He practices for about 30-45 minutes ata time--basically, until his hands get tired. On the weekends, he getting his bass out about every 2 or three hours and going at it. He's even trying to jump the gun on his abilities and read bass tabs off of the internet. He saw me doing that to relearn some of the songs that I used to know.

I come late to this discussion, but,

I like it that your son wants to learn to play the guitar. I also like ti that you are in a position to teach him. The advise you received about the books is a good one. I decided to fulfill a childhood dream to play flamenco guitar, what Segovia called "that most difficult of arts." So at fifty I got my first guitar and started my journey. After several years I finally found resouces which directly address flamenco music and am enjoying myself. Local musicians tell me I am the only one in my area who plays flamenco at any level. So, who knows, I might parlay it into something more.

I say this because I find the 'rock hand' symbol refers to a satanic gesture with your hand wich stands for 666. I therefor feel that as a God loving christian it is not correct to use that smiley. Please consider that. God bless you in Christ, Henry

Either pop songs from todays hits or some of the older popular pop songs. Just a suggestion from maybe the way I'd like to learn a new instrument if I picked up a new one today!
(:
The music you speak of is not metal.
Go to a forum deticated to shitty metalcore.

Ronnie James Dio started using that. He learned it from his Italian grandmother....I believe he's said that it's a symbol used to lift the evil eye, though I may be remembering it incorrectly....

That was a (banned) troll - he wasn't interested in the subject. You, on the other hand - I suspect that (based solely on your screen name) you are a (unbanned as of yet) troll.
