As a teacher here is my advice. Talk to as many parents as you can then talk to their kids.
Go to the school and try to see the curriculum, text books, and tests and quizzes that they give.
I work at a private school but we actually give a personal tour of the school to anyone that is interested in sending their kid to us.

My wife volunteers in our daughter's school and will be volunteering in our son's class as well if they'll allow it. We're fortunate that I have a job that does not require my wife to work full time though and most do not have that luxury.
