    School Question

    My 12 yr old sd came to live with us once her school finished back in Mo. (we had to move in the middle of the school yr)

    Anyway, we are in H school district. We don't know a lot of people around here with kids, just a few. (sure we will meet more once she starts) But the parents we have talked to, neighbors who may not have school aged kids, and others have all told us that H is not a good school. People pay money to send their kids to J school. I have asked these people what was wrong with H school, and their answers varied. I've not heard one positive thing about H school.

    How do I check out a school's "status", what am I to look for. And if we wanted to send her to J school, what do we need to do so she can attend there. (I dont mind driving & picking her up daily)

    It's possible some places - I don't know what it is where you are - that you can put your child in a different school and have the home district pay the tuition. I'm not sure how it works, but I know that some people in this area have done it.

    <mandatory Catholic school plug here>

    Seriously though, when it is time for high school, I highly recommend looking into Jesuit schools in the area. Very few do a better job with education than they do.

    LOL I went to a Catholic school, and would love to send her to one rather than a public school. It just isn't feasible right now...

    Yes, you may want to look into other options. Especially when it comes to high school...that's really where schools test #s really start to dwindle.

    Take solace that according to the writers of Freakanomics, that fact that you are looking into changing schools indicates your kids will do well regardless of the quality of the school they were placed in.

    I went to Catholic School. I had a great time. Parties, drugs, alchohol was available from everyone it seemed. What a waste of money. I could have gotten all that for 'free' at the public school and at least played on some decent football teams. Moved to public school my senior year cause I could not stand the hypocrisy any longer.

    Bunch of spoiled rich kids getting what they want is what I learned at Catholic school.

    I believe it! The bad element can show up anywhere; small towns or big cities. What's most important in all of this is that children have a great home-base with love and support. I went to 3 different high schools and I turned out just fine!
