Napolitano: Closing border not the answer to flu

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano defended the government's response at a press conference Monday afternoon as reporters asked her about the risk of asymptomatic swine flu carriers entering the country.

Napolitano said the strategy of identifying and isolating those who seem ill and try to cross into the United States was adequate given the circumstances, as a reporter asked if closure of the border had been considered.

That woman totally lacks simple common sense! They are only turning away those that appear sick. Well....... incubation period is 2-5 days so how can someone visually tell "if someone is going to be sick". The borders should be closed ... coming and going.

It also makes me suspicious when OB specifically asked for $780 million for pandemic-flu preparedness in the stimulus bill ......... "earlier this year".

You guys do know that preparation for pandemic flu had to be removed from the stimulus in order to get the necessary republican senators to vote in favor of it:

Collins and Specter argued that the funding did not belong in the economic recovery package, although the $870 million figure would have accounted for roughly 1.1% of the final bill's total value. Less than 3 months later, health officials fear that the appearance of swine flu in Mexico, which has traveled to New York City and other areas of the United States, could set off a long feared flu pandemic the US healthcare system is not prepared to handle.

You have to love the left; they find a way to throw mud on the right for a handful of senators who broke away form their party to vote for a bill they didn’t want anything to do with.
