Thumbs down Any Zonies (Arizonians) out there?

They've just hastily called a City Council meeting to try and tax grocery store food in Phoenix. Nice. We're in an economic disaster and now they want to tax one of the most basic and essential needs of humans...food. This will hurt the under-employed, the working poor, senior citizens. Sure, it makes perfect sense to tax people who are trying to save money by purchasing food at the grocery store.

Wanna go to the city council meeting and raise hell with me? Don't tax our groceries! 2pm, Phoenix City Council.

They sound as smart as my whole state. I was thinking, "Where could I go to escape the lunacy? How about Arizona?" Well, maybe not :/ We just retroactively taxed our businesses on gross revenues (to January 2009) for the first time ever -- so now we have a backdoor sales tax, something this state has denied nine times in its history.

    Plus an actual "sales tax"?

    I don't really know - I heard that from a logger.

It's all about money for the State, not helping the poor. I understand now why our Forefathers fought against taxation so vehemently.

Went to the city council meeting. Spoke out against taxing food for families. City council approved it 6 to 3. They paraded a bunch of firefighters and cops around to make everyone feel like we were choosing between cops and the tax. (As if there weren't other options like cutting other areas of the budget or even a different tax that is on NON - ESSENTIAL items such as food for our families!) Now we have to try and get it on the ballot for folks to vote.

The three that voted against it? Were they adamant? What was their reasoning? Will they step up to the plate in a campaign against the tax? WHat's the general mood like about the tax?

I really think there should be a Constitutional Amendment banning taxation of basic life neccesities.
