A way to sell new computers! My old computer says it's designed for Windows 98, NT, and 2000; I got it with ME. When I upgraded to XP, it seemed more like a downgrade. My current one actually says it's designed for XP; if I hadn't specifically requested XP, it would have come loaded with Vista. In fact, it came with a Vista disc so that if I ever so desire, I can "upgrade" to it.

One of the older computers I have - one they gave me when our work site closed, it was the one I used at work - has 98. It originally had 95, but when I went to access the company's Linux/Pick box, it wouldn't work. It was like pulling teeth to get a copy of 98; microsoft was no longer supporting it, but one of our workers in the Dallas area had a copy of 98 that she had never used, and she donated it to the cause.

I understand why Microsoft is reluctant to support old versions of Windows. The issue there is security holes: they'll always be there, and there's a real effort needed to produce the patches needed to fix them.

Plus Vista is big brother it phones home to MSFT about all that you do on it. I don't want to send an error report to microsoft about how my browser unexpectaly quit working while I was visiting XXXXXXX and my ip is XXXXXXX or that my bank routing numbers on the page I was viewing we're XXXXXXX ya get my drift.
This isn't true. They didn't remove the Command Line. Least Privileged
User is for networks or idiots. You have the option of whether or not to send an error report, and this has always been there.

I'm running Vista, and it works just fine. Haven't had any problems. Of course, I recently bought a new computer, so that could be it.

One of the reasons I dislike vista is the preset limit of only 10 outbound connections. If you try to have more than 10 outbound connections, the computer slows to a crawl by design. I believe they said they put in the limitation to try and stop hackers or file-sharers. But if you need 10 connections, Vista really stinks.

OK I'm not a computer geek, why would you need 10 connections ?

I work at a large corporate lawfirm. Many times I have to have several database files open on cases that we work with, or I'll have to have databases open while also remotely controlling other computers. I work in the IT department so if troubleshooting certain things, it's not uncommon for me to have even 20+ open connections. It SERIOUSLY drags the computer down though. ugh

Huh. I've run torrents with more than 10 connections and I've always gotten full download speed. However, if you run databases with SQL, there could be a limitation within IIS that's slowing you down. Or your corporate network is sending you too many connections and they're timing out.
