    Ohhhh! You just reminded me of something. I just got an electronic tuner, and have my guitar in perfect tune - probably for the first time ever. I have a pretty decent ear, and I know when my guitar is out of tune, but sometimes, when it's very close, I can't tell whether it's flat or sharp. I don't even have to hear it for this to work. I just clip it onto the head, softly pluck the string I'm trying to tune, and it registers the vibrations, and indicates if flat, sharp, or in tune. It's not as easy with the mandolin, but it works. Part of the reason it's harder is that the keys turn harder; also for some reason, the strings have to be plucked a little louder to register.
