[FONT=Georgia](Reuters) - A [COLOR=#366388]U.S. appeals court on Tuesday overturned the conviction of Osama bin Laden’s former driver and bodyguard, Salim Hamdan, on charges of supporting terrorism, in a long-running case emerging from the American military trials at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit concluded that providing support for terrorism was not a war crime at the time of Hamdan’s alleged conduct from 1996 to 2001 and therefore could not support a conviction.
**Human rights activists hailed the ruling as a blow to the legitimacy of the U.S. military commission system.

Another major achievement in the annals of government justice.

Sad, my guess is UBL would NOT have been convicted either, after all no witnesses and he was sitting in a cave somewhere.

I seem to remember our President saying that trying terrorists in civilian courts was a good idea.

This was NOT a civilian court that convicted him. It was reversed on LAW because you can’t convict of a crime if it wasn’t a crime when committed. This just shows the folly of trying detainees at all. They should be kept locked up as long as they are PRISONERS OF THE WAR ON TERROR… no trials till the war is over. We already know that 25% of those released come back to kill more Americans.

Better yet just release them and drop a Hellfire missile on them or kill them and tell no one about it. Simple.
