Fourth grader permanently expelled for poppers

You can’t make up stuff this ridiculous.

HENRY COUNTY, Ga. - The mother of a 10-year-old said her son has been permanently expelled from a local school district for popping noisemakers. Now she wants that decision overturned.

The school district is calling the poppers an explosive compound and told Channel 2’s Tom Jones that permanent expulsion is the punishment for bringing them to school.

The mother of the fourth grader told Jones the poppers are a toy that wouldn’t hurt a fly.

Nikolas Cruz, the parkland psycho shooter, was never expelled even though:

Teachers and other students said he kicked doors, cursed at teachers, fought with and threatened classmates and brought a backpack with bullets to school.

Maybe if he had brought poppers instead of bullets to school he would have been expelled.

I’m not clear on what exactly a “popper” is.

It’s a noisemaker that is generally used on the 4th of July. It really is harmless unless you throw it at someone’s eyes. You throw it on the ground hard and it makes a popping noise–sort of like the old fashioned strips of popping material that kids would put in their play guns and would make a popping noise when they would shoot it.

Mike, what would a modern school say about your model rockets? They’re “explosives”, right?
