Michael Moore, mentioned below, is not important. I merely used him as representative of those who
would hold the same position against American snipers, namely that they are cowards and immoral soldiers.
This issue is NOT about Michael Moore. ** The issue is this: Is It Immoral To Be An American Sniper? **
The befuddled Michael Moore says “we were taught that snipers were cowards. [who] Will shoot u in the back.”
More controversy for Michael Moore. The Bowling for Columbine filmmaker provoked backlash on Sunday, Jan. 18, when he made comments about snipers in war. "My uncle killed by sniper in WW2. We were taught snipers were cowards. Will shoot u in the back. Snipers aren’t heroes.
…“Hmm. I never tweeted 1word bout AmericanSniper/ChrisKyle. I said my uncle killed by sniper in WWII; only cowards would do that 2 him, others,” he tweeted on Monday morning following a backlash from fans who took issue with his words.
Michael Moore spoke silly befuddled nonsense. There is zero moral difference between much
of the killing done by regular soldiers in war and the killing done by snipers hidden and firing
from greater distances.
A regular combat scenario often provides opportunities for regular soldiers to "take sniper-like shots"
at the enemy. One common scenario: During combat operations there is a lull. Both sides have slacked
off firing for one reason or another. Soldier John Doe spots an enemy soldier that has not been careful
enough to properly conceal himself thus leaving himself open to a lethal shot. John Doe takes the shot
and the unsuspecting enemy soldier slumps over dead. How is that different in principle from what a
sniper does? Its not.
Anytime regular combat soldiers kill enemy soldiers that were not aware that they were fixing to be killed
(and this is done all the time in wars) then that is the identical same thing morally as what the sniper does.
What does the befuddled Michael Moore want soldiers to do? Call out before they shoot? And say, “Hey look
over here 'cause I’m fixing to try to kill you and I just wanted to give you a heads up so you could have a
Another normal regular combat scenario: An enemy combat platoon is holed up resting for the night. They do
not suspect that they are about to be attacked by the good guys who decided to forego sleep in order to get
a military opportunity. The good guys creep up near where their enemies are resting/sleeping and they throw
grenades over the wall into their unsuspecting enemy and kill 20 of them. How is that morally different
from what a sniper does. What would Michael Moore desire the regular combat soldiers to do? Call out
to the enemy? And say, “Hey we’re gonna be lobbing grenades over this wall in a few minutes, ya’ll get
up now and get ready for 'em. Just wanted to give ya’ll a fair chance, that’s all.”
Michael Moore did not mention Chris Kyle, nonetheless, I say:
Navy SEAL Chris Kyle had 160 confirmed kills during his military service and those targets were morally
legitimate military objectives.
Morally speaking, Kyle was like any other airman, sailor, soldier, or marine that wages America’s wars.
American sailors (and Ship captains) lob gun shells 2, 3, 4 miles away killing unsuspecting enemy soldiers that
"never even knew what hit them." They were all sitting around talking at (say) 2:00 P.M. and at 2:01 P.M. they
were all obliterated into little tiny pieces. How is that different from what snipers do? Its not different. Except
that snipers don’t ever kill as many unsuspecting enemy solders as do ship captains who give the orders to fire
100 pounds shells at the enemy. Next cometh America’s bomber aircraft, they kill huge numbers of unsuspecting
enemy soldiers and other combatants. That’s exactly what American snipers do too, they just do it one enemy soldier
at a time.
Also this point: These days in the Middle East the “innocent civilians” carry guns hidden in their clothing. Women too.
And “children” do that sometimes also. Many of the “non-combatants” have become quite murderous in the Middle East.
Chris Kyle was an American hero. He was not a coward and Michael Moore’s silly point about “shooting people in the back"
as it relates to combat situations is typical silly liberal nonsense. Does the befuddled Michael Moore really believe that combat
is like the silly Hollywood version of “High Noon-Gary Cooper” walking down the middle of the street to give the bad guys a
"fair chance” in a gunfight? What does the liberal Michael Moore want America’s soldiers to do? Call out to the enemy soldiers
and say, “Hey would you mind turning around so I can shoot you in the chest?”
