Obama official: ‘We always knew’ Assad kept some chemical weapons
By SARAH WESTWOOD (@SARAHCWESTWOOD) • 4/9/17 3:40 PM

A former Obama official acknowledged Sunday that the U.S. “always knew” an agreement with Syrian President Bashar Assad did not clear all chemical weapons out of Syria, despite the fact that the administration touted the deal as an unequivocal success at the time.

“We always knew we had not gotten everything, that the Syrians had not been fully forthcoming in their declaration,” Tony Blinken, a former deputy secretary of state and former deputy national security adviser under Barack Obama, told the New York Times.

John Kerry, then Obama’s secretary of state, and Susan Rice, Obama’s national security adviser, had both touted a 2013 agreement with Russia, Syria and the U.S. that was designed to rid the Assad regime of its chemical weapons stockpile. Kerry said in 2014 that they deal had resulted in Syria purging “100 percent” of its chemical agents.

1.) Obama & crew knew from Day 1 that their triumphant crowing was a total lie.

2.) Obama & crew never thought of receiving what Syria did surrender, and then, publicly, say, “OK, we know you’re trying to deceive us. Now surrender what you have here, here, and her!”

3.) Obama & crew knew Assad had used chemical weapons on civilians before, and very likely would do so again.

4.) Obama & crew just hoped they had kicked the can far enough down the road that a later President would get the blame when Assad used more of the chemical weapons he had.

A non-partisan news media would be besieging the Obamas in French Polynesia, John (bleeping) Kerry (wherever he is), and the liar Susan Rice!

Polite words elude me.

I’m still skeptical about who used them. I don’t get the impression that the case has been laid out very well.

I’m still wondering about this with more than a little skepticism. It still seems like it would be a whole lot of political risk for little tactical gain. I don’t get all the news that I used to, but all I’ve heard about Assad’s alleged chemical attacks (the recent one and the Obama-era ones) is we-assure-you-it-happened-because-we-said-so. I haven’t heard any specificity on how the chemical weapons were delivered, or how they know it wasn’t the terrorists who did it in an attempt to make Assad look like the bad guy. In short, I’m giving this whole thing a low grade on the smell test. Does anyone have any more details about the attacks?

I think the French have confirmed the chemical attacks.

#5

Yeah, but who did the attacking? I’m not seeing any indication of substantial evidence that it was Assad.

FC, not sure there are many options and not the Easter bunny was there…

How about the terrorists? There’s no telling where all of Saddam’s stuff ended up when he trucked it out of Iraq.
