Should you have sex with robots? Experts weigh in

Should we be having sex with robots?
It’s a question that has sparked fierce debate among moralists and the robotics industry. And it turns out, they’re all split on what role machines should play in future relationships.
During a discussion at the Web Summit technology conference in Dublin on Wednesday, experts warned about the dangers of getting intimate with robots.
“It’s something we should be very concerned about…because if people feel they can have an intimate relationship with a machine, that is saying something serious about how we’re experiencing empathy with each other,” Kathleen Richardson, senior research fellow in the ethics of robotics at the U.K.'s De Montfort University, said during the panel.

[/quote]Me no . But whatever floats yer boat.

No, because “whatever floats [some people’s] boat” is sex with farm animals, dead bodies, women’s shoes, vacuum cleaners and CHILDREN. I don’t give a damn about farm animals, women’s shoes or vacuum cleaners, but I DON’T want my dead loved ones so abused by some necrophiliac posing as an undertaker and EVERYONE needs to keep their paws off of children…ANY children. Those types are ones whose “boat” I’d love to shoot full of holes and sink!

Meh, they pretty much already exist.

Blow-up dolls and body pillows with mechanized parts exist. The only real difference going forward is how much more mechanized they’ll get, and how well (better?) they can imitate behavior/reaction.

Hell, I’m half convinced a full-on “sexroid” was already built somewhere in Japan. Mamoru Oshii likely inspired someone to do it, he’s only been exploring their societal ramifications in his works for the last 20 years. Maybe it even transforms into a Basset Hound.

Japan has been working the last few years with high electronics and it seems they have been going for the sex portion with machines that have female voices and response to you like you were addressing one of the computers in a future show or the movie Cherry 2000. Japan has worked to make this a reality as one of their goals as well as robots suited for other tasks from house cleaning to space exploration.

It has been mentioned about various sex supplements as the blowup doll or other sex toys and to be serious about this, I assume that one advantage would be reducing the risk of a venereal disease and have a semblance of response from the robot. I would say over time that would get boring after awhile and more would be asked in regards of interaction. The user would no fear having a live woman reject them or engage in disputes.

All that aside this would be the new porn in that not only can a guy or even a gal fantasize they can participate. They can dream up their own scenarios and do them in the safety of their homes rather than looking for prostitutes or pickups.

I realize that what has not been said is the mindset of these individuals and their mental health. While some may use a robot as an easy expression of getting sex others could use that robot as a springboard to go down the dark alleys of perversion for sexual deviations and attacks others. Those who are unable to express feelings and interact normally with the opposite sex.

I imagine a husband or wife may be attracted to such a device if their marriage has become boring and this would be a safe outlet rather than risk rejection or other calamities from a human.

And finally for the zinger wives and girl friends who complain their fellow rolls on top lasts half a minute grunts and rolls over and falls asleep or starts watching his sport’s show

Remember people this thread was done more in gest rather than a serious attempt to discuss it. BTW all you basement liberals will be glad to know there are outlets coming to satisfy your needs besides spouting liberal dogma on social networks.

I had to look up the name on the DVD to confirm, but I correctly guessed that this is a Ghost in the Shell reference.

Sexroids, Cyborgs, digital consciousness, AI’s becoming self-aware, mind hack, literal Think Tanks, etc. it’s simply a feast for those who like to get an idea of of how these things could impact society. And Crime. And War. And International politics.

In Stand Alone Complex, it’s packaged in a Tom Clancy meets* Law & Order*/Criminal Minds/NCIS/insert-procedural-crime-show framework, and while the story can be a bit hard to follow, the real pleasure is just in watching things happen; seeing the implications of technology like this come alive.

Much of which is incredibly scary, not going to lie.

The one on the subject that I’m familiar with is Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence.

Well that certainly covered the sexroids pretty well. I found the film just a bit too preachy though, too eager to drop quotes, to the point that when Bato said “This is no time philosophize” I couldn’t help but talk back at the screen “Just what I was thinking half an hour ago.” Still, I by no means hated it.

Loved Solid State Society, perfectly compliments the original film (a perfect mirror to it too, even if the inevitable ending was a bit hokey), and a solid ending to the Stand Alone Complex spin-off.

Technically, it’s not sex. It’s all by yourself.

#11

If someone make the doll look like themself, it’s not gay, just masturbation.

Ghost in the Shell is one of the greatest series I have watched.

If I remember correctly, Cherry 2000 malfunctioned when the sink or dishwasher overflowed during sex with “her” owner and shorted out. Seems to me that would have electrocuted the owner, too. :freaked:

Maybe it gave him the tingle he needed  Lets not forget the sixth day and the hologram his partner has of a sexy woman

#15

3rd post in and we already have a “Think of the children!” appeal. That didn’t take long.

Trouble is, Maylar, that when you’re discussing sexual perverts, it’ll ALWAYS lead one to bring up pedophilia…eventually. Why? Because the “normalization” going on in this country of other sorts of sexual perversions has emboldened pedophiles to petition for “equal treatment” of THEIR particular perversion.

The life sized blow up doll industry has been around for quite some time. Some men are just REALLY that horny.

Pop culture gave us a sneak peek at this a while back.
In the 80s, there was an episode of Star Trek The Next Generation where the android Lt. Data had sex with one of the security officers. (Lt Tasha Yar.)
In the second Austin Powers movie, he had been married and discovered his wife was in reality a fem-bot, sent by Dr. Evil to kill him.

Sooner or later, reality and capitalism catch up with pop culture.
