SOTU Address: 2019

#1

What are you hoping to hear? Any expectations? What are you expecting to hear? Are you planning on watching?

I’m hoping to hear POTUS remind the nation that the speaker of the house /= the office of the POTUS. The entire nation does not have the opportunity to vote for the speaker. Having the nation held up by the representative of a district in CA is not productive.

I’m hoping to hear that he is sending in the Army Corps of Engineers, SEABEEs, and USMC Engineer companies to build the Southern Wall since Congress is refusing to address a threat to national security.

I’m expecting to hear the normal “we need to come together to address our nations problems, but the state of the union is strong” malarkey.
I’m expecting to hear about how the tax cuts are improving the economy. (I’ll be posting general results from my tax filing hopefully this week. I won’t give numbers, but I’ll let you know if my tax return goes up, down, whatever.)

If I can get home from the gym in time, I’ll be watching. If not, I’ll catch highlights on Hannity I’m sure.

I don’t know what he’ll do, but I feel he missed a good bet by not doing it on schedule in some other venue and making Pelosi look like the bully.

I, too, had felt he missed a good bet by not giving the SOTU address as scheduled. I now think I was mistaken.

After watching Pelosi squirm in her seat behind Trump, attempting to draw focus away from him and his words by continually shuffling 1 foot X 2 foot pieces of paper, repeatedly giving hand signals to her members, and continually appearing to suck some sort of crap from between her teeth, I think Trump’s SOTU was a rousing success.

BTW - I thought Pelosi was going to keel over when Trump noted that while America’s working class were forced to deal with the reality of illegals streaming across our border for many decades the political elites were safely ensconced behind their walls. Upon hearing this, she began sucking her teeth so vigorously I thought she might swallow her upper frontal plate. Of course, Pelosi’s congressional members, you know, the self-proclaimed champions of America’s working class, refused to applaud or show any positive support for this comment. On the contrary, an audible groan from them was their response.

In addition, whenever the camera panned to the little socialist “hood rat” from New York, Ocasio Cortez, she looked like a child in the process of getting scolded by her daddy. It was also very instructive for the American people tuning in to watch the Loony Left sit on their hands when Trump spoke of some having no problem “executing” a new born baby.

This ain’t your mother’s and father’s Democrat Party - not by a long shot…

Lotsa squirmy and annoyed Dems. That was delightful. I didn’t watch it on purpose, but the wife was curious. Got to miss a lot of it though cuz I was distracted by some more productive use of my time as the president went on in the background. .

Good:
“Great nations don’t fight endless wars.”

Bad:
Nothing about controlling spending or debt.

Ugly:
Obsession with a border wall.

I’ll trade y’all a border wall for fiscal responsibility! I’d give y’all $50 billion for it even since Mexico doesn’t seem to be paying for it as promised.

RWNJ. NOBODY with two functioning synapses EVER believed that Mexico was going to write us a check to pay for the border wall. PLEASE don’t fall into the habit of the leftists of implying that was what he meant when he said that Mexico would “pay” for the wall. They WILL. If it’s via the reduction of U.S. dollars being sent into Mexico by illegal aliens or via improved trade issues from the renegotiation of NAFTA or by simply reducing the “aid” taxpayers are forced to send to their kleptocratic government or by STOPPING the flow of U.S. dollars into the coffers of the Mexican drug cartels, the RESULTS will be the same FOR the U.S. WE will gain and Mexico will LOSE.

I loved the speech. My favorite moment was declaring that America will never be a socialist nation.

The look on AOC and Bernie’s faces made me almost as happy as when my first child was born.

#7

I didn’t hear it except for a few snippets, but apparently America thought so, too. My Christian radio news source cited a 76% approval rate for the speech, and even CNN admitted 60%.

Lol, I don’t have the modern Republican capacity to decipher which things and what the president really means or does not mean when he says them. I operate under the notion that words mean things.

But still – and again, my Trump to English dictionary is perhaps out of date – it looks to me like he was looking for a direct payment. But whatever: We were used to seeing this sort of thing since long before the president decided to run.

Mexico must pay for the wall and, until they do, the United States will, among other things: impound all remittance payments derived from illegal wages; increase fees on all temporary visas issued to Mexican CEOs and diplomats (and if necessary cancel them); increase fees on all border crossing cards – of which we issue about 1 million to Mexican nationals each year (a major source of visa overstays); increase fees on all NAFTA worker visas from Mexico (another major source of overstays); and increase fees at ports of entry to the United States from Mexico [Tariffs and foreign aid cuts are also options]. We will not be taken advantage of anymore.

At least one Trump supporter took it that way too, and it’s definitely what most of my Trump-supporting family and friends seemed to think he meant.

I wonder what you thought about his claim when you posted this:

Magna-Yeah-That

I’ve since seen a frame from CNN with the poll results, and it shows 59% “very positive,” and somewhere in the high-teens “somewhat positive.”

#11

Well obviously, the SOTU has unhinged a bunch of Democrats! Look at the NONSENSE they are proposing for us with this “Green” crap.

#12

You mean that “Green New Deal” rubbish from (as I understand it) Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC for short; although maybe it ought to be OHR, for Off Her Rocker…)? That was a profound case of the theatre of the absurd…

#13

Sometimes I hope that AOC will implode and render herself useless, but then I note that Mitch McConnel has decided to put the Green New Deal up for a vote in the Senate. Now Ed Markie, who I understand sponsored the bill, is up in arms because he says putting it to a vote is “a stunt.”

Well, Mr. Markie, if it’s a stunt, why did you sponsor the bill? If you sponsored it, one would assume that you would vote for it. Could be that you and your colleagues, including a bunch of Democrat presidential candidates, don’t want their names associated with it? If so, then you are getting what you deserve.

When you let an ignorant, socialist barmaid from Brooklyn run your party, you should expect things like this to happen.

#14

I think this can be a good thing, if it shows the country how far off the rails the left has gone on this crazy train…

I imagine because he proposed it as a stunt.

I understood that a bunch of Democrat presidential candidates endorsed this absurdity.

Actually, she doesn’t, but I’m still amazed that the left keeps Pelosi as Speaker of the House when about the only place that supports her policies is her own crackpot district. I’m also amazed that she apparently hasn’t soured swing voters on the Ds.
