As it may have been noticed I come up short on the spelling front. I rely heavily on spell checkers as I like to use words that have been reffered to by many I know as $1,000,000 words. My problem is that most of the time I cant spell them and sitting here with a dictonary would be a complete hassel. Could there be help for a complete spelling illerate.
Someone on CU made a reference to an on-line dictionary; you’re supposed to be able to set up an icon for it, but I couldn’t figure out how. I think it was a link to a Merriam-Webster site. Anyone here know about it? I’m generally not into spell-checkers; they aren’t reliable. But with the dictionary, I think you hi-lite the word, click on the dictionary icon and it gives you the definition if it’s spelled correctly, and options for the “correct” word if it isn’t.
I’ll look into spell checkers, but as Susanna said they aren’t very reliable and they can become a pain when using internet slang. (they pick up stuff like LOL).
Don’t worry about your spelling too much, no one is getting graded on it.
Lately I have been using the google toolbar and it comes with a free spell checker!
I often simply write in Word and then cut and paste. It works fine, but you simply can’t abandon all responsibility.
For the web lingo stuff, all you have to do is hit “add” when spell checking. Then next time that acronym isn’t flagged. It adds it to your Word dictionary. It happens with names all the time, and place names.
Sometimes you have to adjust formatting doing it this way.
I suggest more bugs.
I have to do an update here pretty soon for the forum software, you might just get your wish.
Google toolbar is the only toolbar I’ll download. Yahoo and many others are evil. :ninja: Occasionally I’ll download, temporarilly, something for a quick SEO job, but google usually gets the job done.
Well I have pretty much always used Google…thought they were the evil ones though??? Tried the yahoo toolbar for a while but went back to Google. Jmack has been using the msn toolbar but I have not tried it out at all because I really have gotten used to the Google spell check feature. :cowboy:
Fried grasshoppers are quite tasty…
TO, I have some thoughts in reference to the recent porn spamming in Right vs. Left.
Perhaps it would be useful to have a “sticky thread” there with a title like “Porn Spam Not Welcome” or something like that, something short enough to be shown in its entirety in the menu. I realize that it won’t stop the spammers, but what it will do is make the point to guests and new/prospective members who are looking for a clean site for themselves and/or their teenage children to visit that you and the mods (and probably all the regulars) don’t want that garbage here, and any appearance of it is not by our choice, and the opening post could include a message to that effect. And members could bump that thread to the top of the heap to get offensive thread titles off the homepage and the RO Operations menu.
I would like a complete list of all the mods, so that we know who all we can contact when this stuff appears. And…
I would also like advice on how best to contact you and the mods in the event that one of us regular members finds it before you guys do. Maybe these last two items could be included in the premiere post for that sticky thread.
You can contact The Operative, Pale Horse, Elmira Viking, or E-dog, with any concerns. Ive got the computer back up at the house so now I’ll be all over the jerks that come in here. We usually get them out pretty quick, and its always good to get help from other members.
I really don’t think having a sticky with “Porn” in the title would be a good idea. I think it might be a porn magnet, and also, people with family values, and with a site blocker might tend to avoid it.
Agreed. I tried to find a way to erase the users name altogether but I dont think it can be done. Maybe TO can do something in this regard. Just looking at some of the names is offensive enough.
Okay, I deleted the more obscene names…their posts will appear as “guest”.
Good deal! I noticed that the latest was missing as our “newest member” and also missing from the list of members that have been on line today. And, fortunately, some of them advertised themselves so well to start with that they didn’t have a chance to make any posts at all!
I wasn’t sure if this should be here or in the tech forum, but since it’s related to this site, I figured here.
There’s some kind of anomaly with my sig file. I didn’t know it until I saw one of my posts on Mom’s computer. On mine, both the Montgomery Scott quote (red) and the Winston Churchill quote (blue) are in the Verdana font as I chose. But on Mom’s, Scotty’s quote is in some other font. Is it the same on everybody elses’ computers? In any case, what’s going on?

Any issue with fonts is almost certainly pc specific. For example, I’m missing a bunch of fonts in my comp because of a crash I had recently. Usually when the computer can’t find the font it supposed to be in-it defaults to something else. In your case, it is probablu easily fixed by downloading and installing the desired fonts. just do a quick search for free fonts.
