Dr. Greg Brannon steps up to challenge Hagan in 2014
Dr. Greg Brannon, a Raleigh OB/GYN doctor has announced that he will be challenging U. S. Senator Kay Hagan in 2014. Brannon made the announcement at a TEA Party rally in Winterville Saturday. Here is how the Daily Haymaker reported it:
The Republican Liberty Caucus and The Eastern North Carolina Tea Party have united behind a Wake County physician’s effort to unseat U.S. Senator Kay Hagan. Dr. Greg Brannon of Cary has thrown his hat in the ring as a GOP challenger to US Senator Kay Hagan — who is up for reelection in 2014.
Brannon announced his intentions Saturday at a Tea Party event in Winterville, North Carolina. Regular listeners of the Bill LuMaye radio show in The Triangle may recognize Brannon, who is a frequent guest. Brannon also is known for his work with a grassroots organization called Founders’ Truth.
Some may already be expressing concerns about Brannon’s lack of statewide name ID. Think back to 2008. Who — outside of Greensboro and the legislative building — had heard of Kay Hagan?

Brannon may not be widely known statewide, but he is among TEA Party loyalists in Beaufort County. He has attended several Beaufort Patriot TEA Party meetings and was the main speaker at some of them. He adhered to a staunch TEA Party platform in all of his presentations, which were well received with several TEA Party leaders urging him to run for the Senate.
There is little doubt that the Establishment Republicans will put up one or more of their own. House Speaker Thom Tillis and Senate President Pro Tem Phil Berger have been coy about whether they will run. Brannon has not beat around the bush about it. He espouses limited, constitutional government, fiscal responsibility (reducing the deficit), a strong national defense, individual liberties and economic growth by a strong free enterprise system. You can learn more about Dr. Brannon’s thinking by clicking here to read several papers he has written.
The challenge will be whether Republicans, unaffiliated and conservative Democrats can come together behind one candidate or whether the anti-Establishment Republicans will forsake the GOP nominee.
If you are interested in knowing more about Saturday’s meeting, here is a newsletter report from Diane Rufino:
Thank you everyone who attended Saturday’s event at the Warehouse Restaurant. It was a learning event and an opportunity to find out how to translate our conservative ideals and our frustrations at the GOP into political power. We need to get involved in the GOP delegate process and exert our collective voice to elect new leadership and change the party platform. If we work together, speak in a loud enough voice (ie, get enough people involved), and continue to identify and support liberty-minded candidates to represent the GOP and to represent us, then we have a fighting chance to reclaim America.
Karen Kozel spoke about the bottom line - staying true to constitutional and Christian values and using our particular individual talents to advance it. We all have something special to offer and using those talents and gifts, we can pass our message of liberty and responsibility to our children, our neighbors, and to our communities. We start a ripple effect. Karen also encourages everyone to serve in public office, even if (and perhaps even more importantly) at the local level. It doesn’t take that much time out of one’s schedule to serve.
Glen Bradley spoke about the need to get involved in the delegate process. He spoke with a sense of urgency and we should trust him. He has been involved with the GOP for years, has seen how power corrupts, has seen how it has turned its back on Tea Party and other liberty-minded groups, and seen how it has broken the rules and promises it has made to make the process transparent and fair. He says that the only thing that can keep the Tea Party relevant is if it infuses the GOP with its ideals and energy. It will be a win-win scenario, for it will benefit the Tea Party and save the GOP at the same time. Glen is a passionate speaker who understands the importance of fidelity to the Constitution, yet while serving in the NC General Assembly, GOP leadership often punished him and ridiculed him for it. Indeed, GOP leadership targeted him for replacement when they redistricted and put one of their hand-picked candidates to run against him and provided him with funding.
Perhaps the most exciting moment of the afternoon came when Dr. Greg Brannon, an OB-Gyn from Cary and founder of Founders’ Truth, took the occasion to make his first public announcement of his candidacy for the US Senate. He will run against Kay Hagan in 2014. He gave an inspiring presentation why he believes in the limited government adopted by our Founders and the strict construction of our Constitution, and why both are essential - critical - to preserve liberty. We look forward to hearing more from Dr. Brannon.
I’ve attached the comments I made to kick the event off. They include an analysis of the 2012 election.
The Republican Liberty Caucus of Eastern NC, who co-hosted the event with the ENC Tea Party, did an outstanding job of organizing the event and we look forward to working with them in the future to fight the rising tide of progressivism and bring the message of liberty back to the people of our area. They issued the following statement:
“The Republican Liberty Caucus of Eastern North Carolina was proud to host the Liber-TEA Rally in Winterville, NC, a working coalition of Liberty and Tea Party groups working within the Republican Party. We are even more proud that Celebrated OB/GYN critical care surgeon, patriot, and strict Constitutionalist Greg Brannon announced his candidacy for the US Senate in 2014. Dr. Brannon is precisely the kind of Republican we hope to encourage to run for public and party office, and we are honored by having him choose to announce his candidacy at the Liber-TEA coalition rally of Tea Party, RLC , and Constitutionalist Republicans.”
And if you have read this far you will probably find this article interesting, perhaps as a harbinger of things to come in 2014: “Democrats, tea party unite vs. Mitch McConnell” . The story does not have a direct parallel to the Hagan situation but it does present some interesting possibilities if the TEA Party people decide that the best way to save the country is to get rid of both Democrats and Republicans who are driving us into bankruptcy. As Hillary Clinton might say about whether they are Democrats or Republicans: “what difference does it make at this point?” That could certainly be a message to Tillis and Berger as they go into the legislative session.
